I made my teapot out of two flat sheets of 16 gauge copper. I hammered the form out in a wood die using steel and plastic tools that I made. With these tools, I used a process called chasing and repousse, a technique that shaped the front and back of the creature with repetitive hammer blows. After soldering the two halves together, I cleaned and polished it, to prepare it for silver plating. All of the color components are made from cast resin that I carved, polished and riveted into place. I wanted to create a piece that was playful and whimsical. Cowcrab represents the two places that have shaped who I have become, Colorado and Oregon. I chose two animals that for me, represent each state. Combined as a hybrid, it is a self-portrait. This piece has allowed me to challenge myself technically, while making me laugh. The artwork in the Fern Series is intended to inform the public about the ecosystem of the Tillamook Forest in Oregon. By demonstrating the health of these environments the public will be exposed to the realities of our forests and how consumerism is impacting the conditions of these precious habitats. By creating a piece that demands further inspection, I am hoping to engage the viewer to learn more about the urgency of the issue. Environmental Destruction of the Tillamook Rainforest, I made with brass, silver, resin and flocking. At first glance it looks like a soft velvety flower surrounded by elegant pierced ferns but under further inspection the viewer recognizes teeth. A bone, a re-creation, an object that appears to be natural but is actually reconstructed. The blue flocking appears as a mold like substance. To create the flower, I manipulated and reconfigured a beaver jaw. The bone is symbolic of mountain beaver, whose population was devastated due to poachers, but is now federally protected. The male fern has a similar fate and is currently listed as a vulnerable species. In the Tillamook region alone, 215 species face extinction due to logging, urban development, agriculture, industrial pollutants and over fishing. With the human population increasing, these demands are devastating fragile ecosystems worldwide. Clear-cut forests can be seen in satellite images. By destroying and eliminating the size and conditions of habitats, hundred of species’ are experiencing a rapid decrease in population, some of which are listed as an endangered species. I created this piece as a reminder that everything in the natural world is interwoven, not only the living but also the deceased. Retired Stamps I became inspired by the concept of combining materials that are seen as precious and materials that are often discarded. Although I combined all “invaluable objects” while designing and creating Retired Stamps, I was thinking about this concept. I gathered materials from my studio and the remaining supplies from a second hand art supply store, “Scrap.” Retired Stamps, is a large necklace I made with gold vinyl, thread, rubber stamps and brass. Twenty-nine hand cut and hand sewn vinyl bezels hold old stamps used for labels. Similar to the value of materials, I started thinking about the generations of women in my family who crocheted, quilted and embroidered and how undervalued their crafts have been. As a way of honoring them, sewing is the main element of design. Once I had completed all of the sewing, I attached two large hydraulic pressed forms both the front and the back of the piece. I riveted gromets into the vinyl, pierced out diamond shapes from a sheet of recycled brass, and attached all the elements with jump rings. I created the Linoleum Series because I am conceptually intrigued by flooring. We are surrounded by others’ designs and inventions, which play a crucial role in our everyday lives. Flooring is thoughtfully designed, yet as a society, we don’t slow down enough to notice. It is often overlooked, discarded and eventually forgotten in landfills. Flooring holds history and memory. As a way of honoring the linoleum, I laser cut, arranged, glued, drilled and sewed the linoleum together to create an array of repetitive motifs and decorative patterns. In addition, I fabricated metal elements and attached the lightweight linoleum with glue, a needle and thread. The linoleum becomes the artificial gemstones. Some look like granite, others, like precious gemstones or hardwoods. In this series, I want to challenge the idea of preciousness and the perceptions of what we view as valuable versus what is easily discarded. I laser cut, arranged, glued, drilled and sewed the linoleum together to create an array of repetitive motifs and decorative patterns. In addition, I fabricated metal elements to attach the lightweight linoleum with glue, a needle and thread. The linoleum becomes the artificial gemstones. Some look like granite, others, like precious gemstones or hardwoods. The Lifecycle and Deterioration of a Loved One, I created a piece that represents my aunt’s lifecycle and her current journey with stage four ovarian cancer. Last time I saw her, I was startled by the dramatic change in her cognitive abilities, especially since she has always been so intellectual. I began memorizing her physical characteristic. Her big beautiful light blue eyes and her hands. This was the last time I saw my aunt. As a way to process my grief, I created this piece. I began this necklace by piercing out and sweat soldered three circular images; an eye, a hand and a brain. I cut up and re-used an old brass clock gear that I sweat soldered to four pieces of copper. The clock represents her life cycle.
